The Ousopholis Monastery, also known as Fghimta, was located near Rish ‘Ayna in the Jazira region. The monastery's origins date back to the late 4th century, with its construction taking place in the 5th century. Unfortunately, it was reduced to ruins sometime before 1203.
Despite its eventual ruin, the monastery was a significant center for the Syriac Orthodox Church. Its monks faced persecution by Emperor Justin in 519 CE. The monastery also served as a meeting place for church fathers who, in 684 CE, ordained Patriarch Athanasius II of Balad there. The monastery also produced two patriarchs and eleven bishops. One of the patriarchs, Yohanan V, died there in 924 CE. Later, Patriarch Athanasius VIII attempted to renovate the monastery, but was unsuccessful due to adverse circumstances.
