Sayfo Syriac Martyrs
Listed below some of the names of Sayfo martyrs that we were able to gether so far. The number of Syriac martyrs exceeded 100,00 people including bishops, monks, nuns, priests and other clergy. Patriarch Ignatius Aphram I Barsoum collected the numbers from each district and put them in a memorandum he submitted to the Paris Peace Conference in 1919
'Ayn-Wardo: Bishop Mor Philoxenos Abdelahad Beth Mase. He was born in 1838 in Upper Kafro and martyred in 1915 in 'Ayn-Wardo. Fig. 1
Baraqa: Priest Dawud
Bushairiyya: Monk-priests Yusuf, Goriya, Gewargis, Tuma, Yeshu' Rabban Sim'an, who was in charge of this region.
Beth Sabrino: Bishop Abd Al-Nur killed during the attackes of Badirkhan, a Kurdhish chieftain in 1843-1844
Dayro d'Mor Aho - Arzun: Monk Yaqoub al-Habsnasi, Monk Gabriel al-Bashiri, and a priest
Dayro d'Mor Gabriel: We have a the names of 6 monks, in addition to 27 people who died there. Dayroyo Aziz from Karburan, Dayroyo Lahdo from Kfarzo, Dayroyo Daoud from Kafro, Dayroyo Isa from Karburan, Dayroyo Abdullah from Meddo, Dayroyo Murad from 'Ayn-Wardo.
Dufne: Priest Shamoun, Monk Abdallah
Gazarta: Mor Flavianus Michael Malke Metropolitan of the Diocese of Gazarta (Cizre) Martyred on August 29, 1915. He was later canonized as a saint by the Syriac Orthodox Church.
Kfarze: Priest Gabriel
Kafro Elyato: Monk Odom (Adam) from Kafro who was skinned alive and whose eyes were gouged by hot iron. Also killed Father Hausho and his son, Father Aho, Father Gawriye, Father Henna, Father Tuma (Thomas), Father Lahdo, and Father Joseph
Karburan: Mor Antimous Ya'koub, was killed after his tongue was cut for refusing to convert, Fig. 2, and Monk Abdulahad
Ka'biya: Father Moses and the monk-priest Noah
Kharput (Harput): Mor Gregorius Elias Abdo Bishop of Kharput tortured and killed by Ottoman soldiers during Sayfo.
Midyat: Priest Safar
Nisibin: Monk-priest Stephen of Midyat. His hands and legs were cut off and he was tortured in different manners until he was finally beheaded. He was fifty years old
Qarabash: One priest
Qilleth: Priests Ibrahim, Tuma, and Mas'ud
Sa'adia: Priest Daoud
Siirt: Priest Ibrahim Daqto and Father Ephrem, a Syriac monk from the monastery of Mar Ephrem in Mardin.
Severek: Mor Athanasius Denho d'bet Rume was a prominent Syriac Orthodox metropolitan who was martyred during the tragic events of Sayfo in 1915. Historical accounts indicate that while serving in Siverek, he was captured by Ottoman authorities and local forces, then brutally killed by having his head crushed. He was from Anhel and was recorded as a monk in 1870 Patriarchle register. He was ordained a metropolitan of Jezere in 1883. Fig. 3. Also murdered by the Kurds, metropolitan Jirjees who served the episcopal office for 23 years and lived to be 79 years old and two priests Yaqub (Jacob) and Yusuf.
