Diyarbakir kaza
Village of Baglet: Four Syriac families lived in this village in 1915. They were all murdered. Only one young man, Hanna, managed to save himself and went to live in Qamishli.
Village of Zurafe: The village of Zurafe (or Surafe) was a Syriac village situated within the Hawar River district in the proximity of the city of Diyarbekir. Before the Sayfo or Syriac Genocide between 1915 and 1924, Zurafe was populated by approximately 100 Syriac Orthodox inhabitants. The village was the site of a targeted massacre on May 3, 1915. The violence was orchestrated by a death squad led by Shakir Bey, which collaborated with members of the Kurdish Rama tribe under the command of a chieftain named Ömer. During the operation, the adult male inhabitants of Zurafe were apprehended and transported to the village of Chanaqchi, and from Chanaqchi, they were moved to an execution site consisting of a pit located near the village of Hawar-Dejla, where they were summarily executed by gunfire. Records indicate that 164 individuals from Zurafe and its neighboring small villages in the Hawar district were murdered during this event. The victims were characterized as the most notable, affluent, and capable men of the community.
